Dr. Ampollini is a thoracic surgeon. Currently, he is assistant professor at the Unit of Thoracic Surgery, Department of Medicine and Surgery in the University Hospital of Parma. He has been the representative person for clinical and experimental research for the Unit of Surgical Sciences of the University Hospital of Parma .
As of 2014, he's teaching thoracic and vascular surgery applied to nursery into the “Nursing Degree” at the University Hospital of Parma.
Dr. Ampollini is author and co-author of 63 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals; h-index: 13; total citations: 563 (Web od Science). He’s author and co-author of books and book-chapters. He gave several presentations at numerous national and international conferences.
His research activities include the evaluation of novel therapeutic approaches and experimental surgical procedures in animal models of malignant pleural mesothelioma (rat and sheep) and lung cancer (nude mice). He has been involved in experimental projects of lung transplantation in pigs during his fellowship at the Unit of Thoracic Surgery of University Hospital of Zurich (Switzerland) directed by prof. Weder (Jan 2007-Feb 2008).
His clinical and surgical activity mainly focused on minimally invasive surgery, including major lung resections and mediastinal tumors.
He currently serves as a reviewer for several international peer-reviewed journals, including the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Interactive Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Respiratory Care, Journal of Thoracic Disease, Annals of Surgical Oncology, World Journal of Surgical Oncology.
