Professor Peter Goldstraw is a graduate of the University of Birmingham and a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Edinburgh and England. After training in Scotland and South Africa he was appointed Consultant Thoracic Surgeon to the Royal Brompton Hospital in 1979. He has held consultant posts at University College Hospital, the Whittington Hospital, the Middlesex Hospital, Benenden Hospital and with the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.
He is Emeritus Professor of Thoracic Surgery at Imperial College, University of London and has been visiting Professor in Cape Town, Toronto, Boston, St Louis, the Mayo Clinic, University of Virginia, MD Anderson, Singapore and Vanderbilt. He has been invited to speak at 180 International and over 80 National or local conferences and workshops. He has given over 400 International lectures including the FG Pearson on 2 occasions and the OT Claggett, Michael Boyd, Tudor Edwards, EP Richards and Robert Henderson Lectures. He was awarded the Price Thomas Gold Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2004, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the British Thoracic Oncology Group in 2006, Honorary membership of the ESTS in 2007, the Merit Award by the IASLC in 2007 and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland in 2010.
He has published over 290 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 55 chapters in specialist textbooks. He has been on the editorial board of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Thorax, the Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, European Journal of Surgical Oncology, Lung Cancer and the journal of Translational Lung Cancer Research. He has reviewed for many International journals including Lancet, BMJ, JTCVS, JCO and JTO. He co-edited the lung cancer sections of the UICC 7th Edition of TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours, and the TNM Supplement: A Commentary on Uniform Use. He was executive editor for the IASLC/UICC/AJCC Handbook of Staging in Thoracic Oncology and the corresponding Manual.
He has held office in several societies including the Society of Cardiothoracic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Thoracic Society, the European Respiratory Society, the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons, and the Royal Society of Medicine. He has been the Chairman of the UK Cardiothoracic Training Committee, a member of the European Board of Thoracic Surgery and UK representative to the European Union of Medical Specialists section of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was the chair of the IASLC Staging Project from its inception in 1998 until 2009 when the 7th edition of TNM in Lung and Pleural Tumours was published. He was previously the chair of the UICC TNM Expert Advisory Panel on Lung Cancer and a UICC representative on the AJCC. He is President of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and a board member of that organisation.
