Stephen G. Swisher, MD, FACS

Dr. Stephen Swisher is Professor and Head of the Division of Surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center.  Internationally recognized for his contributions to the staging and treatment of lung and esophageal cancer and innovative translational research, Dr. Swisher devotes his efforts to clinical practice and research.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Swisher received a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences degree from Stanford University in 1982 and an M.D. degree from the University of California at San Diego in 1986. He completed a general surgical residency at the University of California at Los Angeles.  In 1994, he entered a cardiothoracic residency in Houston, Texas at the Texas Heart Institute and University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center with an emphasis on thoracic oncology.

Dr. Swisher joined the faculty at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in 1995 as junior faculty associate in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery.  A year later he was promoted to assistant professor of surgery.  He was promoted to associate professor in 2001, professor in 1005, department chair in 2007 and division head in 2014. 

Dr. Swisher is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of many professional societies including the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the American Association for Cancer Research and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
